Pursuiter’s cough

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

After running a few hard intervals this past weekend I came back to the house and was coughing up a storm. I have heard people talk about "persuiters cough" or "track hack" after a hard effort and never really knew what it was. A lot of people, myself included, seem to develop a particularly nasty hacking cough when doing... »

Five down, one to go.

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

The German cycling federation announced Stefan Schumacher was among those caught. No surprise, because he tested positive for CERA in samples taken during the Tour de France, when he won two time trial stages. How was he even allowed to race? Croation 800-meter runner Vanja Persic also is on the list, a source confirmed. Persic did not advance past the... »

Lance Armstrong Screws Up

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

This past weekend Lance Armstrong tried to send out a few videos to his Twitter fans via his iPhone....as it turns out he is human and kinda screwed up.  He ended up accidentally sending his own email address to 700,000 people (all his twitter followers). After an hour and a few  emails he soon realized what he had done.... but not... »

If you have been keeping up with the posts here you would know that last weekend was the Wolfville Roubouix here in Nova Scotia.  It was a great race and and a good reason to get out for a ride.  You can read more about it in the previous post if you want.  Last night I finally got around to... »

Caffeine

Friday, April 24th, 2009

After chatting about coffee (and the absurdly large amount my roommate goes through) I did a little more research about taking caffeine or drinking a coffee before a race.  I found the majority of this article on pponline.co.uk.  They have thousands of other research and fitness related papers related to any sport you want.  I highly recommend checking them out... »

Pro Pictures

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

Do you ever wonder who takes those amazing shots of Lance crossing the line, or the painfull pictures of the pack climbing Alpe d'Huez? Well her name might be Elizabeth Kreutz and she's damn good with a camera.  She just so happens to be Lance's official photographer.  Her web page (http://www.elizabethkreutz.com/) has heaps of photos from... »

A Couple Cool Bikes For 2009

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

This is the bike that Lance Armstrong will ride in 2009 (if he can make up with the French, that is); the newly unretired racer rides fully stocked bikes that are available to the public. Lance's Madones are no different, except for their radical 30-hour paint jobs and the occasional set of decorative gold bolts. For: Road... »

Keeping In The Draft

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

If you ever find yourself in a breakaway you should be hurting....it's like running away from a monster.... you should be scared!  I agree that there are some exceptions to this, such as having a team mate ahead of your group or having a team leader behind, but for the most part you should be working your ass off in... »

Athletes and Fat – A Little More

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

Almost all cyclists and runners know that excess body fat can hinder performance. Although it’s immediately apparent that there are substantial differences in physical characteristics between cycling sprinters and climbers, elite runners and 100 meter sprinters, They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and there are perhaps too many exceptions to make broad generalizations. Generally speaking though, sprinters... »

Getting Dropped

Monday, April 20th, 2009

Sunday was the 13th annual Wolfville Roubaix and it hurt like hell.  The first half 30km of the ride was an easy social pace that anyone could join.  We averaged about 25km/hour while we all talked about how, at the 30km mark, things change pace and the hammer fest starts. And right on the 30km mark, as we turned the corner... »

An Update From A Friend

Sunday, April 19th, 2009

A good friend of mine, Tony Smith, raced down in Hawaii today while I was racing up here in Halifax.  His race went a lot better than mine and he seems like he is in a bit better shape than me these days.  He sent me an email about his ride and it was inspiring to read.   I thought... »

Finishing.. and what not to do.

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

I was on cycling tips blog the other day and saw the post about Common Sprinting Mistakes.  I remembered posting about sprinting a while back on my old blog, so i went back to dig it up. I believe that sprinting is a quality you MUST try and master to be a successful cyclist.  The number of finishes where a lone... »

Powa and fat bikers

Friday, April 17th, 2009

With all this talk about huge "Powa" output one has to think about other factors that effect speed in cycling.  The most common variable that you should consider is weight... hence the common power watts/kg factor.  The previous post shows that Ryders watts/kg output for his record breaking ride is 4.81 watts/kg.  Kobe Davis was kind enough to pass along... »

How fast are Canadians Part II – Triathletes vs Cyclist

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

After doing a little more research, and asking a few more question about Ryder and his climb at Haleakala I was surprised to find out that another Canadian actually "helped" Ryder capture the record up the Haleakala climb, Simon Whitfeld.  Whitfeld was born in Kingston, Ontario.  By age 15 he was pursuing triathlon on a serious competitive basis. Whitfield’s gold medal win in the... »

How fast are Canadians?

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

I have always wondered how an average Joe (like me) would compare to a professional cyclist.  I have ridden against a few very strong riders from teams like Red Truck or Symmetrics back in Alberta and B.C. as well as some  strong riders from Calgary, and for the most part managed to keep standing by the end of the ride...... they... »

This past weekend a lot happened here in Halifax.  Thursday at work was a gong show and I unfortunately had to head into for for a few hours today. Thursday night was Meghan's graduation party at the North Street church here in Halifax and i had a blast.  I only know a few of her classmates but they all seem top... »

My First Attempt

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

I was up fooling around with a video editing program and looking at a few tutorials on Lynda.com last night and managed to make my own little scratchy video. All the images in the video were taken with my Canon XTi camera and then edited in either Photoshop or Final Cut Pro.  The movie is short and sweet but its just... »
